Talk About Commitment

Dr. Laura Schlesinger is a behavioral psychologist who has a call-in radio show. I caught part of it last week. It went something like this:

CALLER: My wife and I are having trouble with the church.

DR. LAURA: Oh? What sort of problem?

C: We're expecting a baby and the church wants to give us a shower. L: Is that a problem?

C: Well yes. They're making us feel guilty.

L: You've lost me.

C: Well, we've been thinking of leaving the church.

L: Let me get this straight. They're giving you a baby shower, and you're leaving the Church. Why?

C: The church is headed in a direction we don't like.

L: What direction is that?

C: They want everybody to be doing something, serving and stuff like that.

L: But isn't that what churches do? Get people to be active in service?

C: Yeah. But we can't spend the time. We're real busy and all. And they get really pushy, too.

L: Do you attend services regularly?

C: That's another thing. They're always harping on that. We have a very tight schedule on Sundays too. What should we do, Dr. Laura?

L: I think you should find a church that requires absolutely No commitment of any kind, and whose motto is Shallower is Better. But then that kind of church probably won't give you a baby shower.

And I thought, "Amen to that Dr. Laura" and then I thought how eternally grateful I am, and will be, that Christ didn't have that attitude of the caller. The Bible says, "Christ humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even a cross"… for me.
