Virg Gellerman gave me an e-mail sometime ago that prompted me to think about the following:
I tried to recall the NAMES OF THE LAST FIVE: MISS AMERICAS, winners of: OSCARS, WORLD SERIES, PULITZER PRIZES, or HEISMANNS.
I couldn’t.
But I can give you the NAMES OF FIVE PEOPLE WHO: TAUGHT me well in school; INFLUENCED me for the better; were/are GOOD FRIENDS; and made some really WORTHWHILE suggestions for my life.
WHAT’S THE POINT?
The accolades FADE; the applause is GONE; the awards LOSE THE SHINE, and we are hard-pressed to remember TODAY who it was we cheered so insanely YESTERDAY.
But the ones who remain in mind and heart are NOT those with the most money or headlines. NO!!! They’re the ONES WHO CARED about us and MADE A DIFFERENCE in our lives.
St. Paul reminded the folks in Corinth that he had NOT COME WITH THE GLITZ AND GLAMOR of some smooth talking, renowned intellectual, but the SIMPLE (YET PROFOUND) message of a crucified CHRIST. By his own admission he was NERVOUS AND SHAKING IN HIS BOOTS, but he cared enough to bring the GOOD WORD OF GOD’S LOVE to them. (I Cor. 2:3)
THERE’S A LESSON IN THERE SOMEWHERE.
