Our Understanding Can Be Undependable

The news these days seems full of "gay" (that word has been hijacked) issues: e.g. sodomy laws overturned, same sex marriages proposed, etc. This has given rise to a huge debate on the subject of morality.

Every morning I read with increasing fascination, letters to the World Herald on this subject. They fall into two categories: 1) There is an ABSOLUTE standard established by GOD who is above all and has the last word… OR 2) There is NO absolute. Each culture and generation sets its own standards of right and wrong; good and bad. Logically, each person does the same thing for himself.

I was thinking that the latter sounded like that old observation: "God created man in HIS image, then man returned the favor by creating God in HIS". Anyway, let me share a few thoughts on this subject (a couple are scribbled from a long-forgotten book review).

  1. If 2/3rds of folks denied the existence of God, would that make Him non-existent? Or visa versa?
  2. The REAL truth can seem far out BECAUSE IT IS. It's not man-made.
  3. If you want to REALLY understand a given religion, don't follow the follower. FOLLOW THE LEADER.
  4. Some people want to UNDERSTAND God so much, they tend to water Him down so that they can.
  5. If God is me, or I am God, then WHEN I NEED HIM MOST, HE'LL BE DEAD.

With all this nonsense, isn't it AMAZING that God LOVES THE WORLD SO MUCH THAT HE SENT THE BEST TO BRING IT HOME. Proverbs has it straight: "Trust the LORD with a II your hearl; don't depend on YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING". (3:5)
