Chapter 4 introduces a couple of things to us unseen previously in Mark’s Gospel. First, it’s the first example of Jesus teaching that we read. We’ve heard of His teaching, but didn’t read much of it until now. The second part is related; it’s the first time we see Jesus speak in parables (an earthly story with a heavenly meaning).
This section actually sets up then next two day’s readings that we will be reading. Tomorrow we will explore the phrase Jesus speaks in verse 9, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” And Thursday, we will look at the meaning of this parable. For today, take note of Jesus’ willingness to speak, and His creativity in finding a place to preach (from a boat), and in the words He speaks (story about a sower, seeds, and soil) that communicates to those who are willing to understand the truth.
Who is this Jesus? An amazing communicator of God’s Word, but more than that, He IS the One that the same Word speaks about!
