Once again, Jesus is confronted by the Pharisees for not obeying the law the way they want it to be obeyed. They had taken the third commandment, “Remember the Sabbath Day by keeping it holy” and expanded it by saying what exactly could or could not be done on the Sabbath. The Sabbath had been made for man, as a day of rest to recover from the week. They had made the Sabbath into something that God never intended it to be - something that mankind HAD to do. They had made a god of the Sabbath, as if man had been made just for the purpose of keeping the day as they saw fit.
Jesus confronted them with the truth. The Sabbath was a gift from God to mankind. It was made for man and they were abusing God’s perfect Word with their distorted rules.
Who is this Jesus? He is Lord, even of the Sabbath. He is the fulfillment of the Sabbath; He is where we can find our perfect rest and peace.
