After a brief description of the person and purpose of John the Baptizer, Jesus appears and is baptized by John.  A couple significant things about the baptism section of this reading:  First, we see the Trinity present, the Father speaking, the Spirit descending upon the Son.  Second, notice the voice.  It is speaking to Jesus in the second person “YOU” are my beloved Son.  It was not spoken for the people around to hear, but for Jesus’ benefit.

Mark’s temptation section is much shorter than Matthew’s.  Simply that Jesus went out into the wilderness for 40 days where He was tempted, yet the angels from God were there helping Him.

Who is this Jesus?  The Father called Him His Son, Satan focused his direct attention on Him, and God’s angels ministered to Him.  This Jesus is someone special, and He’s about to start His public ministry.
