After confronting the reason for the letter in the previous section (wrong teaching about the end times), Paul encourages them to stand firm.  Before he does that, however, he reminds them of something very important.  Their salvation was, and still is, God’s work.  It was God who chose them.  It was by the power of the Holy Spirit they were saved and sanctified (made holy).  It was that same Spirit that they were called through the gospel.

It is in that state of being chosen that they were and we are called to stand firm.  Stand firm in the faith in the gospel of Jesus Christ, that very faith He gave to us!

Don’t pass by the last two verses too quickly.  Our Triune God gave us eternal comfort through the gospel, also comforts us and leads us while we live on this earth.  His promise is yet-to-come AND is in the here-and-now!
