The people of the church in Thessalonica were confused.  Evidentially another letter, supposedly written by Paul, was circulated in that area saying that the Day of the Lord, the second coming of Christ, had already arrived.  The purpose, or at least the effect, of that letter was to create doubt in the hearts of the believers in that church.

Paul tells them in no uncertain terms that it had not come yet, and a sign before that day will be the coming of the man of lawlessness, the son of destruction, the one we often call the antichrist.  This person will come with power and miracles, but these miracles will not be true.  His sole purpose will be to try to deceive Christians into falling from their faith in the One, True God.

When Christ comes again He will destroy the man of lawlessness and his master, satan.  The powers of darkness have no power over us, that’s why they try to trick us.  Stand firm in what you have learned and believe and confess every week.  Put your full trust in the One who will destroy evil forever, Jesus Christ our Savior.
