In this section, Paul introduces the reason for the letter – to make sure the Thessalonians understand what will happen when Christ comes. He spoke about this in his first letter, but must not have answered all their concerns, or perhaps that first letter brought out more questions they might have about that Day of the LORD.
The Thessalonians are reminded that God is a just God, and even though it might seem like the wicked are able to persecute them without punishment, their judgment day will come when the evil will pay for the pain they caused God’s chosen ones. Verse 9 describes it by saying “They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might.” There is not a worse punishment.
But for the faithful ones, Paul prayed for them for God to grant continued faithfulness and strength so that God might be glorified through them. That is a prayer I offer for all of us as well!
