Paul is showing his continued care for the church in Thessalonica even in his absence.  Even though he wanted to return to visit them, he was stopped by the evil one.  When he found that he was not going to be able to visit soon, Paul sent Timothy, the one he considered his own son in the faith.  Timothy’s job was to encourage the people of Thessalonica and to lead them to live their lives worthy of the calling they have been given.

We are reminded in this passage how important it is to continue those Christians relationships that we have with people who may have moved away, or transferred to another church, or maybe simply fallen away from them after a while.  I encourage you to send a note or email to a Christian friend that you have not seen or spoken to in a while, to encourage them in their faith.
