Absalom had waited 2 full years to take out his revenge on Amnon, and he finally had his opportunity.  Perhaps if David had dealt with Amnon when the problem happened, Absalom would have acted in revenge.  But David didn’t, so Absalom did.

David’s family was torn apart.  One son dead and another in hiding over fear of punishment, and the rest of them fearful for their own lives.  And David mourned for his son, Absalom, for three years.

Vengeance is not to be taken into our own hands, and discipline is to be done by those in authority.  Even if the authority (David in this case) fails to apply the discipline, vengeance is still wrong and causes many more problems.
