Two new nations, each trying to show its power over the other.  A few things to note:  First, the Kings (David and Ish-bosheth) were not leading the battles – their generals were.  Second, Abner was the one who put Ish-bosheth on the throne of Israel, he was the true leader.  Finally, this was really a civil war, a battle waged between to sides of the same nation.

What started as a show of force by each side, ended in a route of Abner’s forces (Abner was Ish-bosheth’s general).  Only Abner’s reminder to Joab that their countries were brothers (descendents of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) kept Joab from destroying Abner and his army.

One thing missing in this battle was the seeking of the Lord’s will – by either side.  We, also, too often rely on our own desires instead of what God’s desire is.  Seek the Lord and His will.
