I think we understand the spirit that keeps coming upon Saul; it is the spirit of jealousy. Saul wants David dead because David is more successful than he is. Jonathan tries to convince Saul that David is good for the kingdom, but Saul’s vow not to harm David is short lived. David’s loyalty is rewarded by the threat of death, yet God continues to protect him.

Is Jonathan’s and Michal’s disobedience of the father and king, Saul, a sin? They are not honoring him by deceiving him and not doing what he has asked, yet they are still doing the right thing. They are obeying God and not man. It would be wrong if they were involved in the death of an innocent man, especially the man God had anointed to be king.

There will be times when we are faced with the decision of honoring authority or honoring God. Before going against any authority, make sure that you are being asked to do something that is clearly against God’s will. Pray for God’s guidance, and trust that by honoring Him, He will protect and keep you in the midst of the struggles that might come your way as a result.
