From that one event of David slaying the giant Goliath, his life was completly changed. First, he received a promotion from the sheep pastures of his father to leading the army of Israel – what a promotion! Next, he also discovered his best friend, his confidant, his accountability partner, that would continue until death. David also seemed to achieve a “rock star” status among the people. They cheered him whatever he would do.

But with his new found fame came a problem. King Saul became jealous to the point of trying to take his life. Notice the reason listed in verse 12, “because the LORD was with him but had departed from Saul.” David’s success, which really was Saul’s success as well, was due to God’s blessings. Yet Saul could not recognize it. He only saw it as a tarnish to his own image.

A Godly leader does the task given to him, recognizes God’s hand in every success, and receives praise with humility. May we all learn from David the true heart of a Godly leader.
