The Philistines had the Israelites greatly outnumbered and out armed.  Saul had not waited for the LORD and taken things into his own hands.  Samuel had rebuked him and told Saul that his sons would not be kings of Israel.  He withdrew “under the pomegranate” (maybe a tree or a cave) to rest and consider the next options, and perhaps to pout a little bit.

While Saul was holding back, his son Jonathan was making plans.  He and his armor bearer decided to take on the army all by themselves, determining the Lord’s will in a simple way.  As Jonathan attacked, God provided the victory by turning the Philistines against themselves.

Sometimes a task seems insurmountable.  We hide and worry and plan, yet we never move forward.  It’s like we forget about the faith aspect of our faith, our need to step out into the unseen.  Don’t follow Saul’s example.  Follow Jonathan’s.  Seek God’s will, and when you determine it, step out in faith – especially when the task seems too big for you.  It’s not too big for our God.
