As we begin the study of 1 Samuel, one thing to remember is to not get too hung up on trying to pronounce the names. The most common names in this book will be familiar to us (Samuel, Saul, David, etc.) The first verse has plenty of strange names and places but don’t let that intimidate you. It gets better.
This first section of this book points out the power of prayer. Remember that barrenness in the Old Testament times was considered God’s punishment and was a source of disgrace for the woman, and they were often looked down upon. While Hannah’s husband, Elkanah, tried to assure her of his care for her, Hannah was still tormented by not being able to have children. Notice her response, a broken-hearted-cry-out to God for mercy, and a child.
To this prayer God answered with a resounding “YES” giving Hannah a son. Not always will God answer our prayers in such a way. Sometimes He knows best, and will give us a “no.” While other times He tells us to “wait” for His timing. Never is God’s answer a maybe. Nor is it dependent upon us or our promises to Him. It is simply a result of His grace and love towards us.
