The people of Galatia were known by God, marked as His own, yet turned away from placing their trust in Him alone to putting their trust in their keeping of the Jewish feasts and traditions.  Paul understood where they were coming.  He, too, had been an observant Jew, keeping all the feasts and traditions of his people.  Yet God has shown him the truth found in Jesus, the truth that our hope is found simply in our trust in Jesus as the one to save us, the truth that he shared with the Galatians that they received with joy.

Paul is amazed that they could have so quickly fallen away from the truth.  I think that the anguish he talks about in verse 19 is just a small part the anguish that God feels when one of His chosen ones falls away from the truth.  This is a reminder to all of us of the need to continue to grow our faith, as you are now doing, by continuing to seek the truth that is the Bible.  That is the one thing we can all trust as the source of truth.
