The book of Galatians is key in understanding God’s undeserved kindness and love for us.  A love that, luckily, is not based upon our own ability to do what is right and good.  The last verse is key: “if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.”

When we tie our salvation to Jesus AND something else (whether it’s our righteousness, helping others, obedience, etc), it takes away what Jesus has done for us by his death on the cross, and before long it simply becomes that other thing that we focus on for our salvation.  Hence the danger, and the reason we always focus on the one thing that gives us forgiveness – Jesus Christ and His death in our place!

Yet His death also gives us the motivation to do those good things as shown in verse 20.  We simply live our life by faith in Christ – the one who lives in us.
