This passage is often called the goat and sheep judgment for obvious reasons. When reading this passage it’s kind of easy to think that we go to heaven because of the good things we do. Those who helped others were given the kingdom, while those who didn’t were cast away into eternal punishment. But we are not save by our actions, but by our faith that leads us to do those good things.
Let me try to explain this way. Is it necessary to read the Bible to go to heaven? No. How about going to church? No again. Do we have to do good things to get into heaven? No again. Then why read the Bible, go to church, and help others in need? Let me answer that question with a question. Is it better for your body to each fruits and vegetables, or candy bars and potato chips? Is it better for us to get 30 minutes of exercise a day, or lean back in the lazy-boy and watch Jersey Shore? Pretty obvious isn’t it. Why don’t we do what’s better for us? Because it’s hard work and goes against what we want.
The same is true with our faith. If we don’t feed it through His Word and in worship, if we don’t exercise our faith through our service of others, we become a spiritual couch potato, our faith is weakened, and we become prey to the evil one and his attempts to lure us away from eternal life through Savior, and through the gates of eternal punishment.
