In our passage for today, Jesus uses language that’s familiar to the Hebrew reader.  Often in the prophets of the Old Testament we see ‘the Day of the Lord’ language that we see in the first part of our reading – the sun being darkened, moon not giving light, stars falling, the heavens shaking.  While the Old Testament ties this to the coming of Christ the first time, Jesus extends it to speak of His second coming.

The point of this passage is that we need to be watching and waiting.  Yet one of the problems of 21st century American Christianity is an over emphasis on watching the times.  Some pastors and churches seem to be more about noting the signs of the end instead of focusing on Christ and what he has done for us.  While we are called to watch and wait, we are to do it always with Christ as our focus, not signs nor predictions.
