These verse transition from the pronouncements against the Pharisees and scribes, to the next topic – the end times. Notice Jesus’ compassion on those in Jerusalem. Even after all the struggles with the religious leaders the previous few days, even though He knows all of this is leading to the cross, He STILL has compassion on love for them. He mourns for them. First and foremost, because they do not have faith, they do not believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. Second, because he knows the destruction that is coming upon Jerusalem. About 40 years later, the Romans would lay siege to the city and destroy the temple. Even though they rejected Him, the New Temple, they (and we) are still the ones He was going to the cross to save. Just another example of His amazing love and compassion towards us!
