The confrontation with Jesus continues – this time with a topic we all love – TAXES!!! OK, maybe not so much, yet what Jesus tells the Pharisees in this passage truly applies to us as well. We are all called to honor our country by paying our taxes. The government has been established by God, and we are to support it and be involved in it. But that is not the main point of this passage.
The main point is not ‘give unto Caesar the things of Caesar’ but ‘give unto God the things of God.’ How often do we do that? That’s what the Pharisees weren’t doing. They were dishonoring God by dishonoring the One He sent, His Son Jesus. They dishonored Him by making His religion all about work instead of being all about Him. They dishonored Him by not caring for those who were in greatest need.
Giving to God is more than giving financially. It’s also about giving of your time, your attitude, your very life. So as this tax season approaches, remember to give to Caesar the things of Caesar. But more importantly, remember to give to God the things of God.
