This is the second parable that ultimately answers the question that Jesus was asked, “By whose authority do you do this?” Jesus tells the parable, and in doing so reveals Himself to be the Son of the Father, the one who would be put to death. The authority by which He came was that of the Father. And by answering the question, the chief priests and Pharisees condemned themselves. They were the one rejecting the Son who had been given the authority from the Father. Their judgment would be as they said, a miserable eternal death.
The kingdom has been given to those who have faith in the Son, the one sent by the authority of the Father, to complete the work of salvation with His death on the cross. The priests and Pharisees and elders thought they were bearing fruit by all their good outward actions. But without that faith relationship with the Father, all works are worthless.
We have been placed to manage that vineyard, or your family, your business, your wealth, and everything else. And we are called to return a share to the Lord. Yet these shares are not by coercion or force, but simply as a response to all the wonderful way the Father has blessed us, more importantly through His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
