Remember that this passage occurs right after the chief priests and elders confront Jesus about His authority to do these things.  While Jesus doesn’t directly answer their question, He tells two parables that address the issue.  Our reading for today is the first of the parables.

This parable addresses the intent of the question, and the hearts of those who asked it.  The chief priests and elders said and did the right things, but their reasons were wrong.  They would do everything for selfish reasons – to make themselves look good.  Even though they had been entrusted with the Word of God as God’s chosen people, and even though their actions looked good on the outside, on the inside they were unclean because they didn’t believe, they didn’t have faith.

Those they looked down upon, the tax collectors and prostitutes, the worst of sinners who believed in Jesus were the ones that did as the Father desired.  Don’t rely on ‘doing all the right things.’  Simply rely on the faith in Jesus that he has given to you.
