“It’s easier for a camel to enter through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” One of those difficult sayings of Jesus – especially for us Americans who are all pretty much in the wealthiest top 10% of the world. One explanation I’ve heard about this saying is that the eye of the needle was a door into the city that only an unloaded camel could enter through walking on his knees. That’s not what Jesus is saying – he flat out says that it is IMPOSSIBLE for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. We can’t buy our way in, we can work our way in, we can’t use our money as leverage to help us in any way.
A rich person is in the same situation as a poor person. There is no way they can enter the kingdom of heaven by their own strength or abilities. But while it is impossible for man, it is possible for God. He is the only way that we can enter heaven, only by faith in Jesus Christ, the faith that was created in our hearts by the Holy Spirit. It is all up to God, and not up to us.
And personally, I am relieved that it is not up to me. I’m sure I’d mess it up somehow…
