The first question of the rich young man is a good question - a question that many people ask – “What must I do to inherit eternal life? And the answer Jesus gives is not the one we would expect Jesus to give – “keep the commandments.” What? Doesn’t that amount to earning our salvation? Is that really what Jesus is saying?
Remember that Jesus taught the people how to think spiritually, and didn’t give them the straight answer. When the young man stated that he had kept the commandments Jesus had listed, Jesus pointed out his flaw – love of self over love of God or love of others. Jesus was showing that not even the best person would be able to earn that eternal life. The only way to heaven is through the only perfect man – Jesus Christ!
