This is one of the most important passages in the book of Matthew.  In this section we see the conclusion of the second section of the book (revealing who Jesus is), and begins the final section (Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection).  Jesus asked first who people thought He was.  There were many responses.  People then, like now, try to make Jesus into something that He is not.  But Peter’s answer was correct – Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God!  As important as the Son of the Living God is, Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Christ, the anointed spoken of in the Scriptures, is key.

The next section reveals much to us about exactly what Peter thought Jesus being the Christ actually meant.  Jesus told his disciples that He would suffer, be killed, and rise on the third day.  To this comment Peter rebuked Jesus, told him that he would never allow that to happen.  Peter didn’t understand that Jesus’ anointing, His purpose, was to do just as He had said.

People today are still trying to make Jesus something He isn’t, or better stated, to take away what He is.  Certainly He was a great teacher, healer, and prophet.  But most importantly He is our crucified, risen Savior!  Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.
