While the feeding of the 5000 gets a lot of press (in all four gospels and the focus of countless Sunday School lessons), the feeding of the 4000 does not. Yet it is not just a repeat of the first, this one has much to reinforce about Jesus and to reveal to us about the disciples.
Notice that in verse 32 Jesus states, “I have compassion on the crowd…” Jesus’ compassion leads him to care for the people not just spiritually, but physically as well. Notice that He initiates the conversation, as opposed to the 5000 when the disciples came up to Him.
Notice the disciples’ response. Remember that they had participated in the great miracle of feeding the 5000, and now a similar situation is coming up and they have no idea where the bread is going to come from! Isn’t that so much like us? God provides for us in so many wonderful ways, yet when the next time comes up we worry as if we don’t trust him or believe He can help us. Yet He does, providing for our needs and forgiving us our doubts and worries. What a gracious God we have!
