When Jesus heard the news about John the Baptizer’s death, he wanted some time alone.  Maybe He knew this was a foreshadowing of His own death, or He knew that Herod was also after Him, perhaps Jesus needed the time to mourn the death of John, or to recover from an overly busy schedule.  We don’t know, and it doesn’t really matter, because He didn’t get the time alone.  The crowds found Him and gathered around Him, and Jesus had compassion on them.  He saw their needs, both physical and spiritual, and worked to heal both.

This miracle of the feeding of the 5000+ is the only miracle (other that the greatest miracle of Christ’s resurrection) that is recorded in all four gospels.  The miracle is that amazing.  Think about it for a moment.  Over 5000 people fed with five small loaves of bread and two little fishes.  One person’s meal fed them all, with plenty left over.  When you have doubts about God’s ability to meet your needs, whether those needs are physical or spiritual, remember this passage.  The same Savior that had compassion on the 5000+ has compassion on you!
