Verse 51 has always intrigued me. Did the disciples really understand these things Jesus spoke? If we look at their understanding in the rest of the gospel, I’d have to call them liars, and say they did not understand at all. Yet in the surrounding context of this chapter I’d say yes, they did understand!
First, we have Jesus speaking of how these things had been revealed to them. Their ability to understand was not from themselves, but from God. Second is Jesus’ response to them, another parable, revealing their responsibility to share to treasures of God’s word with others.
The same is true for us. Even though we are often slow to understand the things from God (often because of the barriers WE put up) what we know & believe truly does come from God, and he desires us to help share that treasure with others as well!
