Why teach in parables and stories?  This is the question the disciples had for Jesus, and it is a question that we often wonder as well.  Why didn’t Jesus speak clearly and simply so all the people could understand?  The answer really comes down to two related paradoxes that were tugging the hearts of the people.  The first paradox deal with faith:  the disciples (and us) believe because of God made us believe (note verse 11), yet those who don’t believe are that way because THEY have rejected God (God didn’t reject them).

Secondly, even though the crowds are for the most part faithless, following because of the signs, Jesus STILL has mercy on them, still continues to heal and cast out demons, still teaches with authority.  But he teaches through parables in a way that might break through their rejecting hearts.    The parables are often not as confrontational and are more likely to be heard and understood because it is about something they understand (earthly things as opposed to heavenly truths) that form a connection to the heavenly truths Jesus is trying to convey.

Thank God that He has revealed those heavenly truths to us in our faith in Jesus!  For those you know who are still rejecting that Truth, continue to show compassion that Jesus showed, never giving up showing His love to them!
