Once again, Jesus sees someone in need, this time it’s a demon-oppressed blind and mute man. Once again Jesus shows compassion on the man, casting out the demons, and healing him. The people are starting to see Jesus for who He really is – the “Son of David”, the Messiah! But once again the religious leaders refuse to see or believe. Instead, they accuse Jesus of being sent from the evil one. Notice Jesus response. He begins by logically showing how illogical their accusation is, and moves to show what the true issue is – the rejection of the Holy Spirit, the lack of faith to see who Jesus really is.
He then talks about how nothing good can come from something that is bad. No good work can come from someone who is not a believer in Christ. The Pharisees who were thinking that their good works would earn them favor in God’s eyes, yet in truth those works were seen as evil because of their rejection of the Holy Spirit and their lack of faith. In the eyes of man they may be seen as good, but before God they are nothing. Yet our works, as imperfect as they may be, are seen as perfect and acceptable and GOOD simply because of our faith. What an amazing illogical God we serve!
