How could John the Baptist - the one who prepared the way for the Lord, the one who baptized Jesus – how could he NOT know that Jesus was the Messiah. He was pretty sure earlier, what happened? A lot! John was not imprisoned by Herod, his life was threatened, and he could only hear second hand stories about what Jesus was doing. Perhaps he was sitting in a “dark season of the soul” when he struggled with his faith and couldn’t sense God’s presence in his life. Whatever the reason for the doubt, Jesus removes it with a simple answer. Tell him what you see, all those things the prophets spoke of the Messiah! Doubt is not bad. Doubt left unchecked is bad. Doubt leads us to investigate, to refocus our lives. When doubt creeps in, we often find that its roots come from our relying on our own wisdom and knowledge instead of that of God. When doubt creeps in, give it over to God, and refocus your life on the truths found in His Word. A good place to start is Proverbs 3:5-6.
