At my previous congregation, we would often sing the song “Salt and Light” which states “Make me salt, make me light…”  After the service a person asked me “Why do we sing that song?  What does it mean to be salt and light?”  I was reminded of the need to teach the songs we sing.  So what does it mean to be salt and light?

Remember first of all that Jesus is talking to His disciples, to those who believe His is who He says He is, those who were called and followed Him.  To those he reminds to be salt, to be as purposeful and useful as salt using the gifts God has given them to serve others through their ACTIONS.  He also reminds them to be light, to share through WORDS the great gifts of salvation that God has given us through Christ.

My question is:  How are you salt and light to the people around you?  I’m looking for specifics that might help others be salt and light.
