There are 3 things to note in this passage. First, is the persistence of the evil one to destroy the Christ Child. Not that Herod was possessed by the devil, but the evil one was certainly using Herod’s hunger for power (and preserving that power), to cause him to do evil. Second is God’s protection against all of the evil one’s plans. Continually He sends an angel to direct peoples’ action to make sure the Savior of the world was protected. Finally, three times in this passage Matthew quotes the Old Testament to show the foreknowledge of God. Not only did God know that these things were going to happen to His Son, but He had them recorded in scripture hundreds of years earlier. Know that nothing would make the evil one happier than to have you fall away from your faith in Jesus. He will do whatever he can to make that happen. But we have One stronger than the evil one. One who knows beforehand all the struggles you will be facing and promises to guide and direct you through the difficulties. TRUST in the LORD in the midst of your struggles!!!
