This verse is quoted in Matthew 2 after Herod the Great orders all boys under 2 years of age to be killed. Ramah was where Rachel (wife of Jacob, mother of Joseph and Benjamin) died giving birth to Benjamin and was then buried. Jeremiah prophesied 550 to 600 years before Christ that there would be weeping over children again.
As I read the passage this morning, I saw different people weeping. The ‘voice in Ramah,’ yet also God’s chosen people, mourning over their distresses and struggles, the destruction of their city and their captivity, even mourning over the discipline that God sent them because of their sins. I also hear OUR weeping, in the midst of our day-to-day struggles against sin and its affects. But most of all, I hear God weeping, crying over His people who continually reject Him as God continues to show US His mercy. Who do you hear weeping in this passage?
