I doubt they teach Gideon’s combat techniques at West Point. A small force, no weapons, only a trumpet and a covered torch. Yet his small band of soldiers was not the one winning the battle. They were only God’s instruments, used to show HIS power and strength. It was the LORD who caused the confusion and “set every man’s sword against his comrade and against all the army” (vs. 22). Once the rout started, men from other tribes joined in the battle against the fleeing Midianites. Isn’t that how it often works in the church? God uses a few people as his instrument to start a movement, once others see God at work, they join in to battle. Where in the history of the church, or in your experience, have you seen or heard of this happening?

I think of something like the reformation. Where Luther and a few others saw the abuses in the church and worked to change them. Even being willing to leave the church at threat of death to make sure the truth of the Gospel was being taught.
